Beta Fun & Glitches

STICKY POST

I am participating in a TypePad beta, testing some new features. There have been a few glitches, and I hope for your patience as they appear, and disappear, and reappear...

If you see something that seems wonky, please let me know. You can leave a note in comments, or -- if it's commenting that's wonky, as is the case right now -- email me.

Blogging Blog Reviews

We have recently received three excellent and helpful reviews here at Blogging Blog, and you will see the advice reflected here in our design changes. It's our hope that Blogging Blog might gain a wider readership, and we seem to be on our way. Subscribers are up; Blogging Blog has a respectable page rank of 4; and comes up on the front page -- sometimes even first -- on Yahoo searches for blogs about blogging.

Two weeks ago, Blogging Blog was reviewed at The Weblog Review, which gave us an average rating of 4.3750 out of 5.

This blog is a great idea. People new to the blogging world start their own weblog on a daily basis, and [here] they can find “tips, tools, and toys for the personal blogger”. Those people will luck out when they find this site.

The Blogging Blog is a collection of tips and tricks to make your weblog look... well, more schnazzy.

The header graphic states that this is blog is "blogging for the fun of it," and they sure do have a host of fun items to liven up the average blog. Our authors have done a tremendous job over the past two years combing the web for interesting gizmos, gadgets, and doo dads to help you make your blog more interesting, and less Web 1.0.

They also each had some specific suggestions to improve navigation and fix some bugs; all done, I think.

Bears & Blog Resources @ Blogging Blog

How could I resist this charming couple, found at Chris Pirillo?

Chris and Leo Laporte were very helpful to me (on that computer television network that no longer exists) when I first began blogging, and I still have a special fondness for their tolerance of non-geeks.

So -- a friendly illustration for my reminder to you that we have lots and lots of resources here at Blogging Blog. In addition to our thoughtful, helpful posts (heh) we provide links to many other sites that offer useful information for bloggers.

Just click the links on the sidebar, or below, to explore and discover something just right for you:

I'll be writing a bit more about these lists in the coming weeks. If you have something you'd like to see here, please let us know.

One caveat: we don't link to sites that are mostly ads, and we don't link to sites with even one pop-up ad. Anytime I land on a page with a jumpy sparkly notice across the top that it's my lucky day I've just won... I move right on past.

I bet you do, too.

Renewal

I know, it's been months. This was intended to be a resource for bloggers, especially new bloggers; with links to lots of tools and toys. It still has those links, but being rarely updated, is rarely visited. But that's about to change.

Blogging Blog is going to be a group blog. Three other bloggers have agreed to contribute, and more may join in the future. Look forward to some fresh ideas and energy here. I'll be adding folks to the sidebar, and they'll be introducing themselves soon.

In the meantime, a bit of blogging-related news: Stewart and Caterina, of Flickr fame, are on the front page of Newsweek! They are so cute, and folks who have met them assure me they are just this cute in person. This article, about Web 2.0, or The Living Web, is really quite well done; it explains things well and seems to grasp the essentials:

"It's clear that the Web is structurally congenial to the wisdom of crowds," says James Surowiecki, author of a book ("The Wisdom of Crowds," naturally) that argues that your average bunch of people can guess the weight of a cow or predict an Oscar winner better than an expert can. . .

MySpace, Flickr and all the other newcomers aren't places to go, but things to do, ways to express yourself, means to connect with others and extend your own horizons. Cyberspace was somewhere else. The Web is where we live. . .

My favorite is a quote from Caterina, about the culture of generosity:

. . . the most remarkable thing about Flickr is that the willingness to post pictures publicly—so ingrained in Flickr culture that you have to opt out to avoid it—creates a panoramic effect. Fake calls it "the culture of generosity," but knows that for some people, shedding privacy like that is a stretch . . .

Caterina and Stewart's generosity has been apparent at Flickr from the beginning; it's that open-heartedness that has won my loyalty there. That, and their sense of humor (Flickr has the hiccups.) This openness -- to blogging, to sharing, to mashups -- is an ongoing issue at Flickr, especially with new members -- and an issue bloggers must struggle with as well: how much to share; how much to keep to oneself; how to [realistically] relinquish control of what one sets loose in the world.

More -- much more -- later.

Back

This site has been seriously neglected, as my focus has been on the others. I am reminded by recent comments, though, that there is potential usefulness in this little blog, so I've vowed to get back to it.

Soon, posts on what I've been learning the past few months, for other learners. Also, note the sidebars here -- lots of additions that you may find useful.

Learning Curve

This is my learning blog. Here I will try out new skills, so the look of this space will be constantly changing.

I've learned a lot doing watermark, and now I want to expand my skills without messing it up.

My goals are to learn CSS; learn how to make drop-down boxes for archives; and maybe even learn to "skin" a weblog. I want to play with design and function.

Links and posts here will be focussed on weblogging and related technology.

So let's begin.
